Steve Sklar's Tuvan Throat-Singing Workshops

"His explanations on different Tuvan styles are correct. He is now the master of Tuvan throat voice techniques in the West." - Prof. Tran Quang Hai

I've been teaching Khoomei since 1997, when I began giving workshops with the encouragement of Huun-Huur-Tu. Although I only began singing khoomei in 1995, it was obvious that I had a knack for this exotic art form. And as word spread of my abilities, I began to get lots of requests for lessons. Because I had no regular access to teachers, only recordings, I set out to deconstruct throat-singing into its discrete components and techniques. You see, most indigenous singers learn at a very young age, when mimicry is at its most potent. Children are surrounded by other older singers, and often pick it up through constant exposure, getting some coaching when needed. It's not so easy for those of us living elsewhere, or beginning as adults! The unique teaching techniques I've developed are fun, easy, and safe to use. And best of all, they work!

I've taught and given presentations all over the US, Canada, and Finland, in varied venues such as universities, concert halls, and private homes, and recent teaching venues include Taiwan, Vancouver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Boulder, and the JT Didgefest. If you are interested in hosting a presentation or workshop, please send me an email.

"Steve was more than generous with his time, his energy, and his unique expertise....Steve is part guru, part music teacher and part Catskill comic - somehow he manages to engage all three of these aspects at once. He has plenty of interesting little teaching tricks up his pedagogical sleeve to enable people to make the sounds he wants them to make." - Peter Pringle, Montreal Throat-Singing Festival 4/2001
