Very cool. It sounds like some mix between Mongolian and Turkic music. Specifically I'm referring to the melody played by the topshuur player.

um, I'm still a little vague on all the instruments as well... especially the ones that look so much alike...
One musician is bowing what looks like a doshpuluur with snake skin on it, another is plucking something that looks the same...
I love the sound of the "jug" instrument, that's awesome and has, for me, more oomph than tablas.

I thought a topshuur was smaller like a ukulele, kind of a plucked mini-igil... but what do I know, eh?

Andrew says they are the Inner Mongolian band that's doing the new traditional music thing. Forgot their name...found it, Hanggai. The horse head fiddle is definitely made in Inner Mongolia.

Oh sorry, i haven't seen this thread until now. I, too, guess they are Hanggai who have one record called "Introducing Hanggai", but this song isn't included on the album. You can find further info on wikipedia and myspace.

If what I read is correct, then participation will earn you a CD and if you win, they'll invite you on tour with them or at least a show or two. I am not participating in this, chances are that I'd have to pass on the prize if I won.
