I got that once as a side-effect from vocal strain. Can't explain it, of course, but it sounded like the left and right side folds were doing different sympathetic vibrations independently, giving me a natural tri-tone.

I didn't know one could learn to control that.

Hello, I'm Grant from the UK. I'm of Scottish extraction and my grandparents were great practitioners of traditional Celtic music, so ever since I was a wee bairn I've been interested in folk music. I really got interested in Tuvan folk music, throat singing in general when I stumbled across a Huun Huur Tu record. Good place to start! I've been slowly developing my throat singing for about 6 months now. I'm pretty good with kargiraa and my sigit is solid but needs working on. I'd also like to develop borbangnadyr as those flighty-bird like trills fascinate me in particular.

Forgive the rambling, :P but that's essentially why I'm here.

Welcome aboard, Grant! I'm curious - what was the first HHT CD you heard?

Greetings, Grant. Mighty warmed by the arrival of yet another rambler.

I would love to hear your Kargyraa and Sygyt some time, no matter how much working on it still needs. Do post some, we all like to listen to each other here... :D

It was 60 Horses In My Herd. I picked it up for 50p in a charity shop. I'd call that luck.

Ah, now that's a big ask. If I had decent recording gear... and the confidence... Maybe wait a few years? :P

Sorry for the double post, but I reconsidered and thought that it couldn't hurt to put up some samples. Remember this was recorded on terrible gear - a karaoke microphone to be precise. During the sygyt there is some odd phasing, it sounds like it's going in and out of stereo which masks the harmonics. I can only guess this is a byproduct of the recording as it doesn't occur when I'm singing sygyt normally.

Here is the Sygyt.

There's a bit of a high-end buzz in my sygyt, I need to find a way of getting rid of that.

And I thought I'd have a go a Chylandyk as well. This is pretty much my first attempt, so my kargyraa goes out of tune towards the end.

Here is the Chylandyk.

It's not all that good, really. :/

Not terrible.

The overtones aren't cleanly filtered yet, trust me, that takes a long time to learn properly.

You got the right idea, but need to work on your Core Voice. Until you can really control that, your Sygyt will just be vertical tongue harmonics.

Tip: the vowel shapes that make the overtones are made way down in the throat just above your vocal cords. Unlike Kargyraa, where they are made in the mouth. See if that helps.

Aye, I only "got" sygyt - actually started making harmonics with it - a few days ago, so when I said it needs working on, it's a vast understatement to be honest. I'll try out your tip, too, thanks alot for that.

I've bought Steve's lesson 1 - Any idea on when I'll get the access details for that?

Steve should be back home in the States around July 28 after an extensive visit to Mongolia, Altai, and Tuva.

Hey, everybody. It's taken a while to introduce myself, but I guess that's a natural consequence of being busy? Still learning where things are located in the forum and such. My name's James, I live in Clayton, NC, but am preparing to relocate to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada in a month. I'm new to throat singing and have only been practicing for a month or two. Still learning and hoping to learn more! Hmm.. what else to say? I enjoy martial arts, Reiki, cartomancy, and Braunschweigger sandwiches. See you around,
