for me it is much more then just his specific
technique.
his sense of melody, arrangement and the artistic
approach to the songs is what really makes him stand
out.

for me it is a bit like Tom Waits.
Tom does some interesting stuff with his voice, but
that is totally secondary to his composition and
arrangement abilities.

some of Koshkendey's singing is influenced by Vlad,
but Igor hasn't really done straight up Oidupaa style
for some years now. He's taken elements of what
Oidupaa does and blended it into his own style.

Yes, I agree. Perfection in execution, but it's the feeling that really counts.

Tom Waits is great, love his stuff. Great quote: "I'll never sing opera, but I got the right horn for my car."

I did listen to a buch of TW with HHT. Especially Mule Variations... "cookin' up a Phillipino box-spring haaawwwgg!"

But no Orb. :NotTalking:

... oh, and let's not forget Captain Beefheart...

Well, this thread got me thinking 'bout ol' Oidupaa, and got me listening to DMFJ. Wow! It's not something I listen to often, but, again, wow! With respect to Igor, Imre, and the rest, VO is the master. He da man. [Rock On]

Oidupaa seems to be the master indeed!
He quotes that some of the singing he has done is so difficult that it probably won't be repeated in the next 100 years!
Indeed, I have tried a little Oidupaa style and I find it extremely strenuous, so I generally practice for no more than a few minutes at a time!
It involves maximum pressure and tension. This results in fantastic harmonics though!

alot of blues singers (the 'gut bucket'
variety as Paul Pena would have called them)
do things with their voices that are right
on the edge of throat singing (xorektyr).
some even get some rumbles akin to kargyraa.

Clarence "Frogman" Henry comes to mind

Hell, even John Lee Hooker.  Go listen to "Boom Boom".  I love the lyrics that go with it too.  He sings "I love that talk... when you talk like that" in a kargyraa-like voice.  Hehe.

Don't forget Froggy (Our Gang/Little Rascals). He was a real Soul Man.

Remember, he paved the way for this guy:

Thank you Steve, thank you very much!
Throat singing is one of the revolutionary forces of our planet. Let us use it for good. I guess we go into ourselves and then go back out to the people with this throat singing way.

guys look at this video. this video kinda shattered my image of Oidupaa, but i have to ask this question. and im a huge fan of his music, not just the style. it's not a great performance, but do you think he's just nervous, or just his voice worsened after decades of throat singing?

Yup, it is not a great performance, that is for sure. I can say, after having listened to him three times up on the Ustuu-Khuree World Music Festival stage a month ago and also listening to him from about 5 feet away for over an hour that his voice is just fine. Every so often it cracked a little bit on the minibus to Kyzyl-- just about like mine does now and then.

No biggee. Yup, Vladimir Oidupaa's voice sounded just fine to me a month ago... Crowfoot :Applause:

No, not his finest moment. Maybe he had a cold or ??? That dry ice bs doesn't help, either, as those of us who've throat-sang with that stuff floating about can attest.

Even the greats have off nights. I've seen it more than once. That's life.

This doesn't have much to do with throat singing, but does anybody know what Oidupaa was in jail for?

Yeah, but I don't want to discuss it on a public forum, or much of anywhere really. Let's just say that he was convicted, spent many, many years in prison, paid his debt to society as determined by the courts, and likely represents no threat to anyone, especially here. He now seems like a gentle soul who means well and makes folks happy with his music. I hope to meet him in person in Tuva.

This thread is full of good tidbits. Thanks.

BTW I do remember Froggy from "Our Gang". I recall seeing an episode with some sort of election where he talked a lot. I must have been 7 or 8 and didn't really understand much English then, but it made an impression nonetheless. I just recently thought of this kid.

I also think that a northern German comedian named Otto Waalkes uses Kargyraa-like voice 'effects' in his act. Of course it's pretty pointless to post a sample, unless y'all understand German.

And do you suppose Marge Simpson and her Sisters Selma and Patty Bouvier speak in Karg? It doesn't sound glottal to me...

You mean, Tom and HHT collaborated? If so, cool...
