I'll jus tsay you're improving, based on a couple I listened to. Don't worry about the server, but don't expect me to critique boatloads of samples on a daily (or weekly. or monthly) basis.

Anyone else?

Well thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm not trying to monopolize the site, either, or your time. I am also not looking for exclusive feedback from just Steve, people. Please, don't feel obligated to comment, either.

I guess I should have done what peterofthecorn did and merged all the clips together into one long one...

But then, I don't think I'd have been happy about that.

I really like posting here. I don't have to feel guilty about bothering anyone, since if you're not interested, you are not required to click and read my crap.

Much unlike what I do elsewhere, when I'm ranting at folks to their face or in their airspace and their only recourse is to leave, because I simply won't stop or go away.

I just had an idea. I should take the Camcorder in the car and style there. Confined space without too many reflective surfaces, privacy and it's warm...

Let's see what happens.

OK, I had another session. Well, actually two. One was in the back yard, humming quietly to practice holding a note in Dumchuktaar. The other was as usual at the gas station.

The outdoor one is pretty much a waste, because I can't filter out noise from cars on the nearby road as it's not a constant sound, plus it's way quiet and not very good anyways.

I didn't get too much time to record at work, but I got some cool stylings anyway.

The first I'd like to share is me doing some rough, quick Sygyt. I think it's way off key, well somewhat anyway, so I named it "Blue Sygyt" as a blues reference.

Next for your enjoyment are three Kargyraa clips.
Just a note: I tried to do like 5 minutes of Kargyraa using the same fundamental as practice. I lost the tune though a few times and am only sharing parts of the take to save myself some shame.

The first is me doing one-breath Kargyraa and holding the fundamental steady almost the whole time. My breathing is still quite n00b, so I do trail off near the bottom of my lungful sometimes, but on this one I waiver slightly in the 3rd quarter.

The second is another example of how my note holding improved since last week.
206 Staying on Kargyraa.mp3

The third is me just playing. Just groovin' around while counting inventory. I like it because I am not focusing much on it, so it's not from the brain but from the heart (sap). I also like the way I lost my $#!+ there and kept going and got it back.

And here the same with some Sygyt. Note the improvement (well a little) of tonal quality here. I got even better sounding whistles tonight, after only a few days.

The first shows how I trail off on the fundamental near the end there.

The second is better (duh) and the third is almost good. Actually, I sound real swell when I'm not in the noisy hell that is my workplace. Probably because I can hear myself better.

I also find that I am really liking the sound when I vibrato the fundamental note. For some reason I don't lose the pitch that way and it adds some nice color to the sound, so I will be practicing that more.

I am assuming that if it comes easy and clear, I'm doing it properly, so I guess I can Sygyt now.
These were all still exercises in pitch and breath steadiness. I am getting like 30-second clips with one airbag fill now, longer if I'm not manipulating harmonics. Not wanting to push it, but rather going as long as I can without feeling uncomfortable or getting gaspy.

So, I found oodles of clips featuring Chylandyk. It seems a rare style that isn't often used on its own, but rather thrown in with the other styles as a flourish.

I can honestly say I can't do it. I have a little trouble holding the higher Kargyraa steady, and on the lower Karg the Sygyt doesn't work well.

It's a huge strain to 'hold' all the soft tissues steady against one another and not drop Kargyraa or pitch out.

I am not doing it right if I try to emulate HHT. I don't get near the same sound and I actually see spots after I release. I fear an aneurysm, lol.

I also been mucking about with a medium-low Kargyraa and then shaping formants like in Khoomei. It's like a poor man's Chylandyk, haha.

I heard examples of this before, but I don't get good overtones this way yet, so I'll keep that on the training roster as well.

Anyway, here goes my shameful sample of Chylandyk.

Doesn't sound like chilandyk, sounds like karg with khoomei-type tongue.

Ya, that's what I figured. That's how it feels, but I can't seem to get the correct tongue position to work on my Karg.

Is this a different technique again? Karg with Khoomei tongue? Cause I kinda like the sound if I am not trying to actually do Chilandyk but Khoomei over Karg instead. It's hollow and rumbly and can be changed up nicely with lip opening, etc.

It's right off the drawing board. Thanks for the tip.

I also just listened to some Bugotak. THAT is some cool stuff. I simply HAVE to come up with some instrumentation or other kind of accompaniment.

I'll see what I can do for practice the next few days, I'll be busy...

Ok, here are just two, count'em TWO samples.

These are the usual, noisy singing with filters and reverb. Difference is - this Sygyt sounds sweet.

Told you I got the sweet spot now.

And to Steve:

Kaigal-Ool's tremolo is then what? Lip quiver?

How exactly does one do that? I know the finger thing is cool, but is he the only one to do that?

How is this for an emulation... It's up close and quiet, done by shivering the jaw like when you're cold

Do a search here. You'll find the info.

Hey, are you one o' them guys who takes martial arts and wants his black belt in 3 months?

Ya, pal. Of course it's not good, but I'm very happy with my progress. I still suck, that's a given.

There are belts? How about badges? Pennants, pins, sashes or ribbons?

Black belt will be out of reach for me anyways. I may make orange, lol.

I'm having fun, that's what matters.

Ya lots of fun, indeed.

I'm learning more and more about other cultures daily, finding interesting tidbits about Tuva here and there. Trying to find my way into the words, perhaps to understand them some day. Not really a strictly Asian language, is it?

Anyhow, yes, I'm having fun. I get to practice all the time, i.e. I'm 'playing' with my overtones while going about my days, and it's quite a happy way to do things.

Slowly, I'm getting over a cold I had for days now. Nasty sinus-congestion kind.

Recently, I also changed employment. An opportunity arose to change and choose one of two prospective and competing companies to work for. I remained loyal to the guys who previously sub-contracted to me and blew the other guys off and quit my night job as gas biotch.

This means more time at home with the family (joy) and more sleep, at least most days. And I work only 3 days a week.

So I have a lot more peace now (om) and will put it to good use.

This spring isn't just around the corner where I live. The trees are in bloom and it's moist but sunny and a balmy 15 C. Our landscaper already mowed once last week.

Yes, I live in Canada.

Quit laughing.

I like it here. Better weather than in Florida. Not as hot, not as wet, less gators.

Maybe I'll find a sweet quiet spot outside tomorrow and bring my camcorder...

And you guys probably think I ran off and joined some other fad, right? Pah!

Nah, the language is very Asian. But I'm guessing that really depends upon your definition of "Asian".
